LIMA
Lima one & two day Trips
Within a few hours of bustling Lima, one can find incredible birding opportunities. The trips offered on this page are ideal for those with a few free days in Lima at the end or beginning of a longer trip.
Note: As we are based in Cusco, we can not always guarantee our availability for these trips, but will accommodate whenever possible.
Santa Eulalia Valley
The Santa Eulalia Valley provides an excellent sampling of Pacific slope species, such as Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Collared Warbling-Finch, Peruvian Sheartail and Peruvian Pygmy-Owl. Even better birds such as Great Inca-Finch, Rufous-breasted Warbling-Finch, Black Metaltail and Bronze-tailed Comet can also be found, and the river can produce Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper and White-winged Cinclodes. Typically a full day of birding, this trip can also be made into a two day adventure, visiting the Milloc Valley / Marcopomacocha areas (see below).
Milloc Valley
Some of Peru's best puna birding can be found here, as well as a Polylepis forest featuring especially White-cheeked Cotinga. A typical selection of puna birds could include Andean Tit-Spinetail, Bright-rumped Yellow-Finch, Striated Earthcreeper, Giant Coot and Silvery Grebe. As this valley is accessed from either Santa Eulalia (above) or Marcopomacocha (below), it is usually visited in conjunction with one of those sites, or used as a link between them for an excellent two day trip (see below).
Marcapomacocha
Marcapomacocha is famous for the enigmatic Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, but is also home to such denizens as White-bellied Cinclodes, up to eight species of Ground-Tyrants including Black-fronted, Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Olivaceous Thornbill and Black-breasted Hillstar. Can also be done as a two day program visiting Santa Eulalia and Milloc Valleys (see below).
Santa Eulalia - Milloc Valley - Marcopomacocha Circuit
This circuit hits all the sites included at the right times and provides an excellent couple of days birding. For the birds you can expect, see the summaries of the sites above.
Lomas de Lachay
A desert oasis an hour north of Lima, Lomas de Lachay is home to the difficult endemics Cactus Canastero and Thick-billed Miner as well as Tawny-throated Dotterel, Least Seedsnipe and a host of other coastal and hill species. Can be combined with the South Coast trip (right) for a long day.
South Coast
Visiting Pantanos de Puerto Viejo and Pucusana, a few of the exciting birds we could find are Peruvian Thick-knee, Great Grebe, Red-legged Cormorant and Humboldt Penguin. Can be combined with Lomas de Lachay (left for a long day, or add Cañete for Slender-billed Finch.
